“Does this girl own anything besides ugly cardigans and musty paperbacks?” The girl in question being me but my sweaters are not ugly, they are expressions of art and my classic novel collections are not musty. “I don’t like clubs” I muttered, flipping a page in the novel on my lap. “Too loud.” “You’ve never been to one!” Lena snapped, tossing a pair of distressed jeans over her shoulder. “All you do is read about morally grey men choking and bending women over the tables and then act shocked when we ask you to touch grass”

Her hair was bright pink, her nails painted black, and she wore a T‑shirt that said “Books Before Boys.” “You’re new,” she said, handing me my drink. “Is it that obvious?” “You have that look. The ‘I just moved here and I don’t know anyone’ look.” She leaned on the counter. “I had it too, two years ago. It fades.” I laughed. “How long did it take?” “About a week. Then I found the book club.” “Book club?” She grabbed a flyer from under the counter and handed it to me. “Tuesday nights. The Spined Fox bookstore. We read everything from literary fiction to trashy romance. No judgment.”

Yet here I was, in this room full of people who had chosen me, not because they had to, but because they wanted to. I smiled, a real one this time, and sat at the center of the circle. April clapped her hands together, bubbling in excitement. “Okay, enough of the emotional display. Let’s get to work. Book Club is officially back in session!” Laughter filled the room. We started tossing around ideas for the next reading list, but the discussion quickly turned into a chaotic mess of inside jokes and playful teasing. Maya insisted we include something “dark and brooding,” while Sammy argued for something “funny, because God knows we all need to laugh more.” April rolled her eyes and wrote both

He didn't have the jammer on. She nodded. She understood. "Well, I haven't had any luck on my end either. There are hundreds of neighborhoods just on this side of Atlantis. But you're right. I’d make some new friends, and if that didn’t work out, I’d still have my coursework and classes. The book club met twice a week to accommodate for classes and the time it’d take to read the books, but it went from nine PM to midnight or later, just like a writing workshop—or so I was told. They were more than happy to let me join in, much to my relief, and were very welcoming. One of the girls in the club, Alice, talked to me as everyone waited for whoever volunteered their car for the evening to arrive.

"Let's go a little later. I have some things to do." She dried up her hands on a towel. "In that case I'll go down to the lake and then I'll pick you up in say an hour? Is that enough time?" "Make it two. I have book club. Possibly three hours. One of the girls is bringing little chocolate glazed doughnuts. You should come!" Her book club has some of the most idle gossipers in Sunrise Cove. I wouldn't risk it. I'm past passing off for bloated. "No thank you. I'll go down to the river."

This gave Julie a sinking feeling about this encounter. They sat, and the two men talked business for a while before they ordered their coffee. As they waited for their order to arrive, Leon turned to Julie. “I noticed you have a recent novel coming out soon. Did you know your books have caused quite a stir at the country club with everyone?” “No, I’ve been avoiding the club. Well, I knew a few people took offense. But it’s not something I intended.” Julie said. Her words quietly answered Leon’s question.

He lets out a frustrated sound and tips his head back, his lips moving dramatically as he silently prays for strength to deal with me. I've seen that look enough to know what it is. "Only the first night of book club is at the store. We take turns rotating every week to people's houses. They took pity on us and let us do it together." He says, showing me his sheet of paper showing what week people signed up for. I have one as well, but I just folded it and shoved it into my book not realizing what it was. "Shit, so what does that even mean?" I ask and Everett shrugs.
