I inhaled slowly before dropping my attention toward the notebook resting on my lap, and suddenly the idea forming in my head no longer sounded crazy. If Adrian and I were going to survive this situation without publicly combusting, then improvising clearly wasn’t enough anymore. We needed rules, structure, boundaries, and by we… I meant me. Most importantly, we needed a plan stronger than Adrian’s terrible instincts and my rapidly deteriorating patience. I flipped the notebook open immediately and started writing before I could overthink myself out of it. The words came quickly at first, but every sentence somehow sounded more personal than professional the longer I continued.

For a long second—however long “second” meant here—I just floated there with the pen in my hand and the blank in front of me. Old instinct kicked in. Plot. Outline. Control. The urge to start sketching individual arcs, to decide exactly who went where and what they learned and how they cried along the way. I gripped the pen tighter until the urge passed. No. That wasn’t what this was. I wasn’t here to puppeteer every soul that would ever move through whatever came next. I wasn’t drafting a master novel where everyone hit my favorite tropes on cue.

My eyes fluttered close, my thoughts spinning and the aches in my muscles loosened up. So many things to put in place, so little time. I cracked my eyes open and withdrew a book and pen from the drawer close to the tub. I also placed a wooden table across the water and flipped the book open. Within, I wrote down the time frame I had to carry out my revenge plans and detailed the plans underneath. Each plan had at least five different subsections each detailing the action plan to carry out next. The first was the mystery called Zara. I didn’t set out to write something that addresses these issues directly, but they became a part of her world as I planned out the novel. What are your long-term plans for the novel? I can have a snack whenever I want. I set my laptop on the table along with my journal for plot planning. When it comes to plotting my novels and outlining my chapters, I’m highly old-school. I’d always prefer a paper over a screen. I get that it's messier, but for me, it has a different appeal and inspiration. It’s been so long since I wrote. At first, I decide to check my social media. When I log into my I*******m, I have few new followers, likes and comments.

The floor plan has to be complete, the interior and the exterior needs to be planned, and the type of materials has to be chosen. Same as writing a novel. You have to prepare your characters, build the world where the story will take place, and plan the plot. In that way, once you started writing the novel, you will never get lost. But, sometimes, authors experience what they call a writer's block. It's a period where an author can't think of what to write no matter how hard he tries. This phase is the hardest for any author, and it is what Henrey is experiencing right now. For days, he's been trying to think of a plot for his next book, but no matter what he do, he always comes blank.
