She reached out to smooth Dorothea’s bangs away from her eyes.
Dorothea executed a subtle turn of her head, slipping past the touch, and pushed the open book toward her mother’s hands.
The illustrated page displayed a dark, solitary castle suffocated by dense, twisted brambles. A massive black hawk hovered directly above the highest parapet, its wings casting a shadow over the structure. Hidden within the deep darkness at the base of the tower was a solitary figure, its features entirely unreadable.
"I am reading The Tale of the Shadow and the High Tower," Dorothea said, her finger tapping against the wing of the hawk. "Mommy, let me tell you the story."
