Chapter 8: Good girl Pov: Nyx I looked up as the door to my cell creaked open. My stomach was hollow with hunger, and my throat burned with thirst. It had been days since I'd had anything to eat or drink, and the ache was starting to consume me.

He cupped my cheek, his warm hand a comforting weight. “God is truly kind,” I whispered, looking into his eyes. “After all the pain, this joy feels like a miracle.” James leaned closer, brushing his thumb along my cheekbone. “Let’s start over, Katniss. Let’s rebuild everything from the ground up. I know there will be challenges—hard ones. But this time…” He paused, his gaze firm and filled with quiet determination. “This time, let’s face them together. Don’t give up on us. Don’t give up on me.”

Mother, where is my sister? Lyra looked around. The little girl was gone. Her heart stopped. No. She stood abruptly. Where is she? Kael looked toward the center of the battlefield. There. A tiny figure stood inside a circle of darkness. The little girl. Her arms were stretched outward. Her eyes were glowing white. And in front of her... the First Hunger was screaming. When she saw me approach, she only eyed me long enough to see what I'd scored, before returning to a book she must have snuck into one of the baskets from earlier. The Hunger Games. I knew the premise enough to know it was part of an extensive challenge between morals and survival that seemed to have her immersed enough to focus exclusively on the writing beneath her gaze. But while I began to skin and prepare dinner, I realized she was using it as a distraction as she didn't do as much as flip a page. She was simply debating breaking our silence or remaining obstinate.
