Chapter 23 Third POV Elara sat on the cold stone slab, feeling the warmth of the food settle in her stomach, the energy coursing through her veins like a lifeline. For the first time since her arrival in this dark, oppressive place, she felt a small measure of strength return to her body. The meal had done more than just sustain her physically; it had given her a fleeting sense of normalcy, a brief escape from the nightmare that had become her reality.

As soon as the smell of sickness hit me, I knew I was in the right place. Ahead of me running in the opposite direction were two women. A bright red wig was on the ground behind them as one of them pushed open the emergency exit door, flooding the hallway with sunlight and the ringing sound of an alarm. I could still catch them if I hurried–they weren’t too far yet. But then I saw something that made my heart stop. Ariana, her eyes closed, her body limp as she fell forward… I didn’t think–I just moved. “Ariana,” I gasped as I caught her in my arms. She was covered in the partially digested remains of the toxic pumpkin soup.

Out of the underground hall, through tunnels, until we emerged into a massive chamber buzzing with voices, lanterns, velvet curtains, and the thick stench of perfume and money. The auction. I heard Mara crying somewhere nearby. Lila sniffled in another cage. I pressed my face against the bars and whispered, “Hey, hey, I’m here. I’m right here.” “Rowan?” Mara whispered shakily. “I’m scared.” “I know,” I murmured. “I know. Just… breathe. Please breathe.” Lila whimpered, “They’re scary.” “I know, sweetheart,” I said. “I’m going to get you out. I swear. I’ll get you out.”

"Get up," he hisses, grabbing me by the hair and pulling me to my feet. I cry out in pain, but he just tightens his grip. "Shut up. You're coming with me." He drags me through the house, and I'm too weak to fight back. My mind is foggy, and I can't focus on anything. All I can feel is the pain wracking my body, and the fear that's consuming me.
