Clara's POV I rose again, lighting candles against the encroaching dusk, their flames dancing shadows across the walls. The chamber felt alive now, breathing with the storm's pulse, and I moved through it like a specter—trailing fingers over the dagger's hiding spot, inhaling the faint trace of his cologne on the pillows. Hunger gnawed at my belly; the betas had slid trays through the door slot—bread, cheese, stew gone cold—but I picked at it mechanically, sustenance for the war ahead.

“Two thousand twelve.” “Huh.” Harrison drank from his mug. Lucas picked up the book again. Chloe appeared with the second sock on and her hair in a braid I hadn’t taught her. She went to the counter, inspected her lunch, declared the apple bruised, rejected it, took a different apple from the bowl, and was at the door in under forty seconds. “Bus. Bye. Mom. Dad.” “Bye.” Lucas followed her out with the shark book under his arm. The door banged. Harrison set his mug down.

549’s POV “What did they say?” Twelve asked as she twisted the cap of her water bottle. I shrugged, trying to act casual. “I passed.” She froze, then her eyes snapped to mine. I looked away, unable to bear the pity that swirled in those grey orbs. “Oh five forty nine,” she sighed, dropping her bottle. “I’m sorry.” I nodded, my gaze fixed on the tray of food in front of me. “I hope I get picked!” A girl squealed, bouncing in excitement as she walked past our table.

I say hurriedly as I run forward and knock the bowl from the girl’s hands just as the first man drops to the ground, convulsing. Chad jumps to his feet. He hasn’t eaten. Many of them haven’t. This is a disaster. More men drop. Chad grabs me hard, his claws slipping into my shoulders. “What did you do?” “Nothing,” I scream struggling to get free. “The fuck you didn’t!” he yells, looking around at his men writhing on the ground. “Run!” I yell at the girls. Maybe I was trapped, but they could get free. They don’t move. Mary looks petrified.

Chloe leaned back against the pillows, the room thick with tension. Hunter settled beside her, his fingers brushing hers. “Chloe,” he started, hesitating. “I can’t focus. I’m starving.” She stayed quiet. The air felt heavy, like everyone was holding their breath. Hunger wasn’t something they talked about, not until now. The crowd watched the screen. She turned to him, her voice steady. “One of us has to keep it together, right?” Her hand grazed the faint scar on his face. “Hunter, no matter what happens, I hope you get what you’re after.”

Lexie looked at me then back at Chase and says, “Why would he put up a fight? He doesn’t want me, but you do.” “Oh, my sweet Lexie, you don’t know my brother like I do. He hungers for nothing more than you.” Chase tells her and I leave out a growl warning him as I reach for her, but she pulls Chase’s head down to hers and places a very sexual kiss on his lips and then pulls away from him and looks at me and says, “There my lips were on his again what are you going to do about it?”

The children place the end of the string lines into the arena. *Tink!* It pierced the arena tile with ease. *Do.. Do do do doooh!* The children's hands turned into jagged clawed digits. Nails sharper than a tiger's teeth. *Doooh!* A green wind formed around Moro's mouth to keep him from talking. *Schlick!* In one swipe, they cut into his chest. *Schlick!* His heart was removed. The children then ate the fresh heart and then the flesh in front of everyone. It took less than a 7 seconds for them to finish.

I'm furious “ What is the meaning of this? You took me to this place without my permission and now you want to restrict my movement. Alpha or whatever you are called, it can't happen” He stood up and threw the plate of food to the ground and lunch towards me. He began strangling me, I couldn't breathe “ How dare you talk to me like that. Am the alpha and you have to respect me.” I tried to push him but he was too strong. I began to lose consciousness
