“He won’t purchase anything while he’s here.” I stretch, slow and insolent, and let my boot nudge Ronan’s shin under the table. He doesn’t twitch, but I feel the heat of his attention drag over me like a hand. This is our game. I poke and he pretends not to enjoy it. We both lie badly. “Next,” Mara says, mercifully done with diplomacy. We move through roofs, rations, broken latches, the thousand small mundane things that hold our lives together. I wiggle in the uncomfortable chair and it creaks loudly. Every head twitches to the sound like strings being pulled.

I believe you're well rested for today.” My eyes traveled to one of the contestants who had been a leg injury. She had been limping since we got out of the infirmary. There was no way she was surviving today's games with a bad leg. “We are playing the hunt,” Darius said slowly like he was waiting for each word to slowly get into us. “You would be chased through the woods by hunters. The finest ones picked by Alpha Raphael.” I swallowed and turned around to see the crowd watching. My chest grew tight. I glanced at Kaia and she nodded. I exhaled.

“They want to see the human who caught a king’s attention. Wear the black gown and don’t be late. This isn’t just dinner, it’s a trial. Play it right if you want to survive.” He left, and the tether pulled tight, like an invisible leash trying to drag me after him.
