I turned off my phone and stood.
My legs were numb and my knees weak, but I remained upright.
When I returned to Natalie's apartment, a cardboard box sat outside the door.
Inside was the pothos I had left at the house, now completely dead.
A note in Tyler's handwriting was taped to the pot.
"We returned your things.
"Stop fighting over the house. You can't win."
I lifted the dead plant. The soil was bone dry, and every leaf had yellowed or fallen.
