“You’re always welcome home, Jacob,” The man said, laying a hand on my shoulder. “Never think that because you are not active, you’re no longer one of us.”
“Chief …”
“You'll always be a firefighter, son,” He interrupted me, his index finger pointed towards my chest, although his warm, blue eyes always remained fixed on me. “Your heart and mind know it, Jacob. Your ranks will always exist. Your heroic actions will always live in each of those people you managed to save. So never forget what you did. And don't forget what you still are.”
