My eyes blinked back the tears threatening to spill out from my eyes.
Biting on my lower lip, I picked it up.
“Hazel. I wouldn’t be coming home tonight, Jane said she wants to sleep in her house and doesn’t appreciate your energy. I have to be with her.” He muttered as if he wasn’t talking to me about his mistress.
“Are you there?” His voice echoed. The voice that I fell in love with. The voice that had never spoken to me softly or with care since I knew him.
“Yes, I’m here,” I said, my voice low.
“Good night… I..” he didn’t get to finish as Jane's voice came up, asking him to end the call already—well he did.
Leaving me feeling dejected all over again, my leg got weak and I squatted.
Seconds later, I got up on my feet and dashed off to my room.
I brought out my bigger box and began packing my stuff into it.
I was done with this marriage and for good.
Damien could have all the time in the world with his mistress now without having to inform me about anything.
A few minutes later, I found myself dozing off on my box.
The whole stress since Grandpa was buried began weighing down on my body.
My whole joint was beginning to ache and since I was carrying a child, I decided to take a warm shower.
My body and mind seemed to relax as I got into the warm shower.
Time moved so fast, I woke up the next morning, still in the bath.
I must’ve felt really comfortable under the water.
Slowly, I got out and put on my robe.
I opened the door into my room to see Damien, standing in front of my mirror.
His hair dripping wet, he must’ve used the other bathroom.
Why was he bathing here? And since when did he get here? And his mistress? So many questions on my head.
He swiftly turned around when he noticed my presence.
“Hazel I saw you were having some rest in the shower and decided not to disturb.” He said, his voice unusually soft.
I nodded and went on to clean my dripping hair.
To my amusement, he came closer to where I sat.
I looked up at him and his face was soft—too soft to be the man I used to know.
And when I looked deeper, I could swear it was guilt I saw flashed though his eyes.
My heart began beating faster. Was my husband coming back to me as supposed? Was this a sign that my marriage would work?
As he locked his eyes with mine, my heart began pounding hard against my chest—it was overwhelming, at the same time exciting.
His eyes softened even more, it left comfort in my chest—something I’ve never felt since I got married to Damien. What had come over him?
Did he finally see through the love I have for him?
“Hazel, about last night..” his voice began, softly. God, I couldn’t be happier.
Damien was speaking to me in his most delicate voice for the first time in our five years of marriage.
I nodded at him to continue, my inside excited but hiding it from my face—I wasn’t sure what he had to say yet.
He was taking it slowly as if trying to pick words that wouldn’t hurt me, Damien had never done that.
Or did he get a hint of the divorce and he wants to amend his ways?
“I’m truly sorry Hazel. I know I’m not supposed to do that with Jane in our room, meant for only me and you.” he muttered and I could swear, my being was filled with bliss. Until he spoke again.
“Maybe we should’ve done it in the guest room or something and for that, I’m sorry.” He muttered, cupping my face in his palm.
The apology, was wrong and not complete, but Damien just apologized to me—that was enough for a start.
Maybe I should keep on hoping? What if he finally discarded his mistress someday and apologised to me for everything he had done?
My eyes darted off to the brown envelope on my bed.
Maybe I shouldn't push with the divorce anymore and just hold on a bit?
For a moment, I felt like telling him about the baby.
He could be very happy about it.
But on the other hand, I didn’t really deem Damien fit to be my baby’s father anymore.
I've gone through so much in Damien’s hands and would it not be very careless and selfish to add my baby to this chaos?
What if he later chased us out on his own, because I refused to leave now? That would be more painful. God, I wouldn't be happy to see my baby suffer that with me.
While I was fighting my head, my heart wanted to let him know so much.
Just when I opened my mouth to speak, his phone started ringing and I needed no one to tell me it was indeed Jane.
His eyes lit up immediately and I felt a heavy lump formed at my throat. With a pool of tears welling up in my eyes.
The kind of excitement I had never seen in his eyes appeared in no time.
Without holding back, he ran out of the room to pick up her call.
Even though he left, I could still hear how softly he spoke to Jane.
I brought my box out and continued packing from where I stopped yesterday.
The woman in front of me was a mirror. She wore my clothes, had my hair, and held a pen that looked like it could rewrite the stars. She stood in the middle of the park like she owned the sunlight, the grass, and the very air I was breathing."Who are you?" I asked. My voice felt rough, like I had been silent for years."I am the one who writes the drafts you discard," she said. Her voice was cool, calm, and carried no heat. She did not sound like a villain. She sounded like a colleague. "The Architect was just a project manager. He had no vision. He treated this world like a chore. I, on the other hand, love the mess."I stood up. My knees felt weak, but I didn't let her see me shake. I had already faced the void. I had already watched my world tear apart. What was one more copy of myself?
The Architect stood there, looking at me like I was just a toy he had left on the floor. His face was blank. No anger. No hate. Just that same cold, professional smile that had followed me through every hell he created."You really thought a hospital room was the end?" he asked. He tossed a stack of papers onto my bed. They were scripts. My life, written in ink, detailing every heartbeat and every mistake I had ever made. "You are not in the real world, Hazel. You are in the sequel. And I have already decided how this one ends."My blood ran cold. I reached for the pen I saw on the table, but my fingers passed right through it. It was a projection. A lie."Where is Bryan?" I demanded. I stood up, ignoring the IV line still taped to my hand. I ripped it out, letting the blood drip onto the clean floor.
I stood on the street corner, my hand still gripping the invisible weight of the pen. The air in Lagos felt different now. It was no longer the heavy, fake air of the recycle bin. It was real. I could taste the dust from the road and the sharp scent of exhaust fumes. It was messy, it was loud, and it was perfect.Bryan stood beside me, his eyes wide as he looked around. He touched his face, his arms, then the brick wall of the shop behind us."Is this it?" he asked. "Are we actually here?""We are," I said. My heart felt light, but I kept my guard up. The Architect was not the type to give up. If he wanted to play his game, he would have a plan B.I checked my pocket. The pen was still there. It felt smaller, less like a weapon and more like a tool. But as I pulled it ou
My fingers felt the cold metal of the pen in my pocket. It was not just an object; it felt like a weight, heavy with the lives of everyone I had ever known. I looked at Bryan. He was still staring at his hands, his face pale. He looked like he was waking up from a long, bad dream."Bryan, look at me," I said. My voice was steady. I had to be strong. If I showed fear now, we would both be gone.He lifted his eyes. They were wide and confused. "Hazel? Why does this feel so strange? It’s like I have memories of places I’ve never been. I remember dying. I remember fighting in cities that don't exist.""It’s because you were part of the story," I told him. "And so was I. But we are out now. We are standing in the real world."
I hit the floor hard. My shoulder throbbed, but I forced myself up. Bryan was beside me, his gun already out. This was not the Lagos I knew. The buildings around us were made of flickering glass, and the sky above was a giant screen pulsing with a bright, angry red word: DELETE."What is this place?" Bryan asked. He watched a group of people walking past us. They were moving in a loop, taking three stiff steps, turning left, then three steps back. They were not real people. They were puppets stuck in a broken loop."The recycle bin," I said, my chest tight. "He did not just move us to a new city. He threw us into the trash. This is where he puts characters he is finished with before he wipes them for good."A group of figures in gray suits stepped out from the shadows at the end of the alley. They did not have faces
I stood on the sidewalk, the sun warming my back. The noise of Lagos was all around us, cars honking, people talking, the smell of street food. It was real. It was messy. It was home.Bryan stood right there, waiting for the bus. He looked at me, a polite smile on his face, like I was just another person passing by. He did not know me. He did not know about the Mainframe, or the pen, or the way we had fought side by side in a world made of paper. My heart sank. I wanted to run to him, grab his arm, and remind him of everything. I wanted to tell him about the code, the factory, and how he had saved my life a thousand times. But I stopped myself. If I told him, he would think I was crazy. He was a blank slate now. He was finally safe. If I pulled him back into my mess, the Architect might find him again.
The silver liquid from the broken glass brain was inside me now. It felt like a thousand cold needles were stitching my heart back together, but with thread made of ice. I looked at Bryan, the man I had loved, the man I had trusted and saw a stranger. His eyes were

The white metallic tentacle squeezed our small boat until the fiberglass cracked. We were being dragged backward, away from the open sea and straight into the dark shadow of the yacht. Above us, the fleet of ships with the silver eye symbol moved closer. They looke
Chapter 051The sound of the door locking was like a gunshot in the quiet cabin. I spun around, clutching Elle to my chest. I kicked the wood, but it didn't budge. It was reinforced with steel. I was trapped in a box, and someone was watching me through the tiny lens in the corner."Who are you?" I
