I hadn’t.
I gave Harper a chaste kiss goodbye. His hands lingered on my waist, reluctant to let go. The house felt lonely, empty, with just him in it, he said. I could feel it too, even with the log fire crackling and a myriad of candles lit on the coffee table and mantelpiece. I noticed, for the first time, the Christmas decorations that Harper was beginning to sneak down. It was too early – it wasn’t even December yet – but he loved Christmas, and every year he’d try to slip some past me, unnoticed. This was the first year that he’d succeeded.
