Aleah pressed, her gaze searching his face. Hunter sighed lightly, a small, wistful smile playing on his lips. "Nah, I’m fine. I’m just… happy for them, you know? And I guess it hit me—this is the first Christmas I’ve spent with everyone. Usually, I’d be off somewhere on a mission, alone." Aleah’s expression softened as she reached for his hand. "Well, this won’t be your last Christmas with them. There’s next year, and the year after, and every year after that. You’ll always have them to come home to."

Nothing felt like enough. “Silas,” I whispered, pressing my hands to his chest. His breathing was shallow, his body too still. The scent of silver mixed with blood was suffocating. The hunters were getting closer. I could see their shadows through the gaps in the trees, hear their low voices cutting through the air. I squeezed my eyes shut, muttering a prayer to anyone who might be listening. A shift in the wind made my breath catch. A familiar voice rang through the air. “Let’s wrap this up! We’ve got enough!”
