His Straight Pet
I had grown beneath its shadow, felt it whip my back, pierce my skin, choke the air from my lungs when I displeased him.
And now it was turned fully upon me.
“Still you stand,” he said, his voice carrying over the din. “You were always stubborn, Jude. But stubbornness is not strength.”
The thorns lunged. I barely rolled aside, the barbs slicing my arm open to the bone. Pain flared white-hot, but I staggered upright, sword slick with my blood.
“Strength,” I spat, “is defying you.”
He smiled then. A cold, hollow smile that promised only ruin.
