I’ve seen it in men who thought they could outlast me. I didn’t expect to hear it from behind this door. I take another step forward, then stop myself again. My knuckles hover in the air, muscles tight with memory. “If I knock,” I say quietly, “you’ll expect something.” Hope is dangerous, it makes people careless. “There are no exceptions,” I remind myself. I lower my hand slowly. Deliberately. I straighten my jacket, restoring order where I can. The Don settles back into place because he has to.

I look so young in the morning light, in this room, as though I’ve regressed to being a little girl again. The thought feels like warm marshmallows in my brain. I hold my breath as I press down the door handle. Here we go. Now or never. Maybe he isn’t even up yet. Maybe he’s already up and gone, leaving my clothes in a pile with nothing but a get out of my house, you dirty little bitch message waiting for me. I hope not.

I want to be the one who brings the light into our home today. I throw on my coat, shoving the test stick carefully into the zip pocket, like it’s some precious artifact. My whole body is buzzing. My heart flutters like a trapped bird in my chest, not from fear this time, but from hope. It’s been so long since I’ve felt this kind of hope. On the drive home, I rehearse it over and over.
