On the third day the Council's messenger arrived. He came from the east, following the trail that curved around the flooded section, and he wore the formal gray of official communication, which in Obsidian Crown territory meant he had been sent deliberately and his words were meant to be heard as if Drax himself had spoken them. Except Drax was standing ten feet away when the messenger arrived, and the look on Drax's face was not the look of someone who had sent a message.

I clicked on the message icon and my heart dropped when I saw the messenger. Kilan.

After hesitating, the messenger muttered a name. The blood in my face started to run out. No. It isn't possible. Caleb scowled. "Who is that?" I tightened my jaw. "A ghost." I had prayed that I would never see that ghost again. The messenger breathed erratically. Nyla, he is aware of your existence. He is on his way to get you. And until you are dead, he won't stop. Through the trees, the wind howled. Caleb turned and looked at me intently. "What is he discussing?"

I am the designated messenger your parents assigned this number to for you and finally, you are reaching out to me today” he explained and my jaw dropped when I realized how genius my parents were to come up with this. Please take me as your prisoner instead… I swear to serve you forever!” There was a tense silence before the general let out a huff of amusement. “Look up here,” he ordered. The messenger slowly raised his head, hope flickering in his eyes. But it was quickly extinguished as the sound of a blade slicing through flesh filled the air.

As per the book, the messenger's abilities were more helpful to others than to them. They were the perfect secret carriers since they could not relay the message to anyone other than the person it was intended for. On top of that, they would never consciously remember the words of the message for themselves; the words only came to them when the right person arrived at the right time. I am simply a messenger, a harbinger of the truth that lies beyond."

Zayn widened the door slightly and glanced at me with a frown. “Why?” I asked, approaching slowly, still adjusting my shirt. “I don’t know,” the messenger said. “He just said you should come immediately.” I swallowed hard. “Is… is someone with him?” The messenger nodded slowly. “Yes. An Alpha.” My blood turned to ice. “He came looking for his son,” the messenger added. I nearly dropped.

The messenger continued, “You are encouraged to bring company with you. It would be appreciated.” I exhaled sharply, forcing myself to maintain composure. “Tell the beta I’ll be there,” I said, masking my irritation with a faint smile. “I’m looking forward to witnessing his…celebration.” The messenger offered another bow before turning to leave, but I stopped him, compelled to add, “I’m sure it will be quite the spectacle.” My tone was sharper than intended, but he nodded without question, perhaps sensing the bitterness underlying my words.

Not yet. There were still enemies watching. Secrets waiting. Truths buried deeper than we knew. But for once, I wasn’t standing at the edge of destruction. I was standing at the beginning of something. Something of mine. Something I chose. Then the door suddenly opened. A messenger stood there, pale and breathless. My grip tightened around the Commander’s hand. Because I already knew. Good news never arrived looking terrified. “My Luna.” The messenger bowed. “We received a response from the outside packs.”
