The strap around her middle, the cool pressure of it, and then the sound filled the room. The heartbeat. Fast and steady and impossibly small, that rapid flickering rhythm that sounded nothing like an adult heart and everything like something new and urgent and alive. Danica fixed on it immediately. Her eyes stopped moving. Her breathing slowed. Everything else in the room, the doctor’s voice, the clipboard, the light doing its flat steady work above her, all of it receded to the edges. There was only that sound. She held onto it the way a person holds onto a railing in the dark.

I listened in the somewhat tense quietness, the heartbeat of people, the most overwhelming sound out of everything I could hear. My eyebrow furrowed as I realised something. The more I focused on the heartbeats, the clearer they became. But even amongst the five hearts that were beating with tension and adrenaline, there was a little heartbeat that stood out in my ears above all the rest. Fuck.

I took off my clothes, down to my boxers and climbed in bed with her. “Baby there’s something I want to try, okay? I need to do this.” “Do what?” She asked with those beautiful hazel eyes all watery. “I need to listen to your body.” I slid down to her very flat stomach and got comfortable and leaned in. I cleared my mind and increased my hearing. For some reason, a calmness overtook me, and my heart was light. To my surprise, I heard a whooshing and then a myriad of heartbeats. I know I heard at least two. My heart started to beat fast and there seemed to be a lot of confusion in there. Instinctually, I released my alpha call and the confusion cease.

The light surges toward me. And the two heartbeats inside my body merge into one.

She said to me and nodded encouragingly. For a split second, I could see how serious she was about the whole situation that I forced myself to bring both my eyelids down as I paid attention to the sound. Then steadily, it progressed and I could hear it as it beat steadily. There it was, a tiny heartbeat that was buried underneath my own as it made its tiny presence known.

I couldn't even recognize why my heart has gone wild now for the nth time. It's not just that each beat is fast and loud. Erratic, chaotic, slow then suddenly speeding up, and very strong. I could hear every heartbeat as if I was wearing a stethoscope that was directly opposite my heart and meant to let me hear what kind of effect Waldo had on my heart. "Waldo..." I mumbled.

The steady beat of his heart echoed against my chest, sending a quiet warmth through me. ​

Eunice’s POV I could hear his heartbeat, steady, warm, alive, beating for love, beating for desire. I didn’t know what came over me. Perhaps it was that same heartbeat that seemed to echo inside my own chest, syncing with mine as if the two were made for one rhythm.
