She clings to him, sobbing into his shirt, her fingers twisting the fabric as though afraid he will vanish if she lets go.
He rests his chin gently atop her head, his voice barely a whisper. “Whenever it becomes too heavy… Whenever you feel like you’re drowning, look for me. I’ll be here. Waiting in the corner, waiting in the shadows, wherever you need me. I’ll be the one to carry you away, if that’s what it takes.”
His hand strokes her back slowly, calming the tremors that rack her body.
Adrianna nods weakly against his chest, her tears soaking through the cotton of his shirt. She feels so unworthy of him, so small and selfish beside the vastness of his heart.
