She greeted them in turn with a smile. When May turned back to glance at the driver, what he said next took her off guard. "You can trick others with that pretty smile of yours but you can't deceive me. If your eyes could show your soul, everyone laughing with you will cry when they see you smile." May's eyes bulged out, "Pardon?"

I blurt, my palms damp with anxiety. His stoic expression never wavers. I can't tell if he believes me or not. His steady gaze could burn holes through me. My heart hammers against my ribcage, the noise filling my ears in the deafening silence. "Is that so?" he asks mockingly, making me wonder if he hears it, too.

Ocean eyes. The kind of eyes that reminded me of someone in my past. Someone who had ripped my heart from my chest and crushed it under his boot with pleasure and mirth. The very person who had played with my feelings and destroyed the slightest reputation I had. Someone who stole everything away from me. My heart. My love. My innocence. My family. My friends. My dreams. My entire life.
