It was a marriage made to improve our power in the family business. Though they have kids, they still don't love each other. I wonder how they live. Well, that's far from my business. Love doesn't exist. I actually don't believe in it. Marriage is done for some important reasons. Lastly, my younger brother Ivan. My favourite person. I love him so much. I would do anything for him. Back in school, you don't fucking mess with him. Touch a hair in his head and you are a dead meat. Ivan is my baby brother. I am five years old than him. Julio is two years older than me.

I approached him, my blood fuming. “You fucking ba—” “Sapphire!”My mother rushed in, Jonathan close behind her. “Oh,” Jonathan said cheerfully. “I see you’ve met Lucian.” Lucian. My stomach dropped. “Remember I told you Jonathan had a son?” my mother said gently. Jonathan smiled. “Lucian, this is Sapphire. Your stepsister.” The word hit like a slap. Lucian’s gaze sharpened. “Stepsister,” he repeated slowly. Oh hell no. “I’m not doing this,” I muttered, turning away.

The hallway to the top floor felt colder than ever. My soul trailed silently behind my three brothers, watching their angry backs. Every step they took felt like it was crushing my shattered heart. Clara had been left downstairs to "rest." It was just the four of us now. Three living brothers. One dead sister. The observatory door came into view. That heavy, black metal door. It used to be my favorite place. As a child, I’d watch the stars with my brothers from there, listening to them tell ancient vampire legends.

His voice was low, amused, the nickname he’d used since I was twelve and still wore braces. I shot him a look. “Call me that again and I’ll push you off that infinity pool.” His mouth curved—just one side, the way it always did when he knew he’d gotten under my skin. “Noted.” I turned away before he could see the heat crawling up my neck. Ethan Kane had always had that effect: one lazy grin and suddenly I was thirteen again, heart racing because he’d ruffled my hair and called me cute. Except now I was twenty-one, and the way he looked at me wasn’t cute anymore. It was something else entirely.

I pleaded. "He was. He was our brother until he ruined everything with his own hands," Matteo let out, firm and resolute. "Now, all he is to us is an enemy that needs to be killed before he causes any more damage to anyone else." "He did not do anything! Stop trying to make fucking excuses. If you want his properties, then just take it. No one's going to say anything to you," I was desperate to save my dad. "Just admit that you two are so fucking greedy that you're willing to kill your own brother!"

Sure enough, I'd be the one to go. In the past, I would've thrown a tantrum, acting spoiled and crying loudly until they let me go with them. But I felt it was useless. Self mockery wretched through my wolf. It was sad that I had to resort to that to get their love or care. But my brother and sister never had to resort to that; they just got what they wanted and my parents always took their side and cared for them. I knew it was useless to throw a tantrum anymore. I had finally understood that I would never be as important to them as my brother and sister.

My dad commented, dragging me out of my thoughts. "I didn't expect to show up." I managed a smile, hoping that my voice doesn't betray the hurt I'm feeling inside. "You know me, always doing what's shocking others." I shrugged. "Yeah, it's your thing, even if you make others uncomfortable." Rolland clenched his teeth. I laughed, wondering when my older brother will stop being such an ass and finally understand I really don't care too much for him and his antics. "You seem angry I came for your wedding," I straightened, "didn't you want me here?"I challenged.

What is wrong with him? He lowers his head to my ear. "Literally." Dear God. It's like he is trying to get us killed. "Is that so?" My mom's smile is bright. She is happy with the idea that I'm getting along with my soon-to-be stepbrother. Sorry to break it to you mom, but that couldn't be further from the truth. "Yh. She lends a helping hand to me whenever I need it," Oh my God. Someone kill me now and end this nightmare. "She never leaves me hanging." Another mutter under his breath, "except once."

Things would never be the same between us. He was my brother but the way he felt and the way he made me feel was not the same. I couldn't explain it but my heart fluttered in my chest like a butterfly in a jar. All it wanted was to escape and right now the only escape was in the lips kissing mine, I grabbed his face with both hands and deepened the kiss as I kissed back.

He had never seen how my brothers once treated me with kindness. My eyes misted over, and I earnestly repeated: "Really. They used to love me. They truly did."
