he whispered softly, “I never will.” His thumb brushed lightly against my skin. “No matter what choice you make, I’ll still stand beside you.”

He picked something up and turned back to me, with his expression unreadable. then he walked back to me with a smile on his face. He placed a dark silk ribbon in my hand. “This is just a symbol,” he said. “Not to hold you, but to remind you that you're here by choice.” I held the ribbon, unsure what to say. My heart beat loudly in my ears, I didn't understand what he meant. “You don’t have to do anything,” he said gently. “But if you stay, I’ll guide you Slowly and carefully.”

I sat down beside him, feeling a little more at ease with him by my side. The sound of the rain and thunder continued outside, but with Mike here, I felt like I could handle it. We talked for a while, and I felt myself relaxing as we chatted. His presence was calming, and I was grateful to have him in my life. As the night wore on, the storm eventually passed, and I could feel myself becoming more at ease. I knew that I would be okay, and with Mike by my side, I felt like I could handle anything. As we sat beside each other, I couldn't help but feel grateful for Mike's company.

"Then what are you asking?" He pulled back, meeting my eyes with an intensity that stole my breath. "I'm asking you to trust me enough to let me stand beside you. Not in front. Not behind. Beside. We're partners, Angie. Equals. When you fall, I catch you. When I stumble, you steady me. That's how this works." He took my hand and pressed it to my own chest, right over my heart.

“You are nothing in this world without me at your side.” I smile up at him. And then I turn my back on him and walk away. “We’ll see about that,” I say.

He stood in front of me, barely acknowledging the man that stood beside me, and he opened his mouth. “Ruby a word.”

“That’s amazing, buddy. Is that me?” He nodded vigorously. “Yeah! And that’s Mommy, and that’s me!” He pointed to three stick figures standing beside the wolf. My chest tightened. He had no idea how fragile this peace was, how close we were to losing it all. I hated that I couldn’t shield him from the darkness lurking just beyond our doorstep.

He just pushed off the wall and fell into step beside me without a word. I needed some air from all these.

I didn't want it, not for him. “I don't know how I feel. I am trying to stand strong, but it's requiring a lot more from me than I can think.” He said, looking away from me. “But trust me, the one thing that is keeping me on my feet, that is keeping me holding on, is you being by my side.”
