“Let it come for us both. Because I’m done hiding behind the walls you build. If this storm is coming, I’ll stand beside you.”
For a long moment, he said nothing. The wind stirred between us, carrying the smell of smoke and rain. His gaze dropped briefly to my hand, ash still smeared across my skin, then back to my face. Finally, he exhaled. “You’re going to be the death of me.”
“Then at least you’ll know you weren’t alone.”
Something in his expression cracked then. He reached out, brushing his thumb along my cheek, leaving a faint streak of soot like a mark of belonging. “Stay close,” he said.
