She just sat next to me on the bed and put her hand over mine.
"You do not have to do this," she whispered, and I could see the fear in her eyes too.
I looked at her, then at the card, then at my own reflection in the dark window. "What choice do I have?" I said, and my voice was Alessia's again, tired and whiny.
"The bravest one," she said, and she squeezed my hand. "You can do this, Kia."
She used the new name like a shield, and I took it from her. Her courage was small, but it was the only light I had in the dark. Also, she was the only friend I had, so I had to believe her.
