His eyes scanned the hall like it belonged to him. He stopped at the base of the platform. “Stand here.” “I already was.” “Then stand here again.” His tone gave no choice. I stayed where I was as he stepped up beside me. He stood close enough for me to feel the warmth from his arm. “You’ll speak the oath here. Every pair of eyes will be on you. They’ll judge every word and movement.” “I know.” “Do you?” His head tilted as if he wanted to read my thoughts. I looked at the doorway and the light on the floor. “They’ve judged me since I arrived. Tomorrow is no different.”

Watching. The moment it appeared, the memory itself trembled. Emma felt fear. Not her fear. The fear of the first Emma. The fear of the first Ethan. The fear of two people realizing they had been seen. The Observer whispered. "The beginning." Emma's heart pounded. The memory accelerated. The presence above them examined them. Not cruelly. Not kindly. Objectively. Like an equation being evaluated. Then— It spoke. The words echoed across the memory. Across Emma's awareness.

Isabella’s heart slammed against her ribs. “Who’s there?” The forest darkened slightly. Branches creaked overhead. "You feel us." The voice sounded ancient. Not male. Not female. Something older than both. Isabella took a step backward. “What do you want?” Silence lingered for several seconds. Then the voice answered. "Observation." The word echoed through her mind like distant thunder. Isabella shook her head. “You’re the ones watching.” "Yes." Her pulse raced. “Why?” The air grew heavier around her.

Hands wandering, eyes closing, breaths mingling. And all I could do was stand there, frozen, and watch it happen.

m. All of the guys are staring at me as we get our assignments for the day. I take my assignment and go to the pool area. I hate working the pool, but at least we rotate it out. All day, I will be passing out towels and listening to people scream at their kids. When it is over, I can get back to her. I am aching for her.

Story of my goddamn life. I stand very still, dead in my tracks and turn around with a ‘fuck’ falter of my heartbeat. I wasn’t even looking around me like I normally would, so preoccupied and obsessing over Lexi. I have wandered out to the other end of our very long street where roads cross and traffic is flying past the end and down by me every few seconds.

Everyone just stood and wasn't saying a word. When Mr. Evidence realized how deaf they all became, he ordered them in anger.
