So close I could hear his breath, the subtle hitch in it. “What if you make me feel that it can be different?” I asked in a voice barely above a whisper. His brows furrowed. Still, he didn’t step back. “What do you mean?” I swallowed. “I mean, what if I feel stronger… better about myself because of the effect that I have on you?” My fingers reached out and trailed lightly over the fabric of his shirt. I felt his warm skin beneath. “What if you show me that the path to healing can be different?”

Until my sides hurt. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Belle staring at me, her expression filled with pity and concern. That look snapped something inside me. “What?” I shouted. “Do you think I’m crazy?” My voice trembled with anger. “I’m not crazy,” I hissed. “I’m not insane.” The words spilled from my lips with an intensity that surprised even me — a desperate attempt to assert control over the chaos threatening to consume me. But beneath my anger, I could feel the cracks forming.
