It’s my favorite thing to do and for nothing in this world will I lose it. Reading the last sentence of the letter, tears stream down my face as drops of it fall on the letter. I can’t believe it’s been two years without you Rach. I miss you every single day and I won’t stop finding you no matter how long it takes.

“I want you to know that I’ve never been gone that you’re always in my heart no matter what happened between us. I sent a book every day to your home as a message that I have reasons, that I never hurt you intentionally, that I care about you, that I love you every day.” Her tears fall from her eyes, but she remains silent. “The first book I sent I know it didn’t reach you. I have a message written on it. After three days, it was returned to me. I didn’t stop though, I’m still sending a book every day. The post office called me after a month and they all returned the books to me. Your mom sent them all back to the post office.” She shakes to cry. I get closer to hug her, and she hugs me back

“I missed you too.” “Really? I’m the one who texts and calls first every day. You were only gone for a few days, but it felt like years to me. I just stared at the text, the simple words cutting straight through the heavy armor I had spent the entire day building. No long explanations. No excuses about his father's job or losing touch. Just a direct acknowledgment of the pain and the distance between us. My throat suddenly felt tight. Twelve years. Twelve years without a phone call. Without a birthday message. Without a single explanation. And somehow, those six words hurt more than complete silence ever had. My thumb hovered over the keyboard. My hands were shaking now. I typed out three different responses— Don't worry about it. It was a long time ago.

They didn’t understand the depth of the bond i had lost, but they were trying to be as helpful as they could. Without even thinking about it I found my fingers writing a message to Romer. “The girls and I are going out for dinner, wish you could join us. If you need me you can call” I sent it, and the read tick didn't appear. He hadn't read any of all the messages I sent him in the last 6 months. He hadn't obviously replied to any of them, but I just couldn't bring myself to stop reaching out for him. Maybe one day, he’d answer.
