With an effortless contraction of its bog-iron fingers, the ledger of the First Dynasty was reduced to a handful of fine metallic gray sand. The moment the silver log disintegrated, the purple ice canopy above the valley collapsed. A three-mile ring of static dropped from the sky like a falling guillotine. The shockwave turned the snow into a dense wall of gray ice-powder. Elara was thrown backward off her stool, her vitrified right arm finally ripping away from the basalt cube.
