Under cover of the rain I could make sure that I left the city behind me, and I left no tracks. In the years since the great collapse, I had learnt to think like this. His words were knives now. “You act like the world is some fair place where people will treat you gently if you cry hard enough. That’s not how it works. Not in my pack. Not in any pack.” I looked down, blinking hard. My throat was tight. “You want to survive here, omega?” he continued, his voice low but firm. “Then stop being such a damn whimpering child. Stand. Breathe. Walk. And when you see something brutal, don’t collapse. Process. Move.”

Meanwhile, the warriors from the alliance continued arguing fiercely among themselves. From where I sat among the audience, I could only shake my head quietly. I felt neither surprised nor disappointed. This was simply human nature. Benefits had a way of exposing people’s true selves. Even close friends could turn against each other for treasures. A world filled with people who take what they want and destroy anything in their way. I learned early how to survive.
