Theresa was old enough to have experience, but looked young enough to please Salem’s eyes—two key requirements for a housekeeper in his home. “Where is Salem now?” I asked. A hefty stack was piled in one arm by the time I’d finished—for now—and I narrowed my selection down to three. No pleasure reading this time, I was on a mission. One was a text on abnormal supernatural biology. Another covered the mythology of chimeras, strange creatures featuring numerous animal and human parts. The last was a history of dark witches. After stashing the remaining books on a side table, I climbed back up to the third floor and eased into the hall. The corridor was empty and quiet except for… Was that music?

Khyrix immediately stepped between me and the text, "Let me go through it." He laid the book on the table. As he carefully opened the heavy cover to the table of contents, I leaned over his shoulder, holding my breath. There was a strange substance growing all over the pages. Whatever it was, it grew like a network of veins, wrapping tightly around the edges of each sheet. Khyrix’s eyes scanned down the table of contents, instantly opening to page four hundred and thirteen. The page revealed a highly detailed, hand-drawn illustration. It was an exact replica of the massive tree that stood at the heart of our academy grounds.

Ora stepped closer and gently took the book from her hands, flipping it open with practiced fingers. “What do you think?” she asked. “These are poems. Very old ones.” “Do you understand the writing? The language looks strange to me,” Nyxoria asked, tilting her head.

Although I’m not too better off myself, pacing the hallway like a lunatic, sipping the same espresso I’d reheated three times and still hadn’t drunk. I told myself I was chill. But my wolf kept pacing in circles inside me. She was too far away and naturally, I didn’t like it. Not one bit. ALPHA GAVIN I found something online, some kind of old book but scanned very poorly. It was one I hadn’t seen before since I buried myself in my research. It seemed almost ancient with visible ruins and the title was faded. No signs of an author name either. Just a mark, a crescent moon carved into the spine.

He wrote his full name and filled in the other details. “I’m signing for two.” He told the man and then propelled the book toward him. The man closed the book and then cocked his way toward the open corridor. “Go find your book.” Miles and I exchanged glances. We had no idea where to begin from. I sighed and gave my forehead a delicate scrape. “You might have to help us look around.” “And what are you guys looking for?” “Chicago Curses Volume 1.” I replied. His eyes lingered on me then they darted back to Miles.

Did we have the wrong address? The door at the end of the dark corridor opened, and a man stepped on the sill, his eyes meeting mine for a fraction of seconds. It was him. The man who had dared to touch what was mine. I gritted my teeth and pulled the trigger again, but he dodged and trotted back into the room. “Dom,” I called and followed through the door, down to what looked like a basement. The place smelled horrible, like the sewer. There were rows of rooms, all torture chambers. Most of the doorknobs were coated with blood and even the gritty grey walls had blood smeared on them. The door at the very end had its lights on, and I ran toward it.
