Lyla’s POV I woke up with the taste of metal in my mouth. My tongue felt dry and swollen, and my skin burned, then chilled, then burned again, a fever inside me that had nothing to do with heat. My entire body was shaking as if the bed had turned into a boat and I’d been thrown into a storm. My hair stuck to my face, damp with sweat, and when I tried to sit up, my muscles refused to obey, cramping painfully instead.

Her dried lips and itching throat wanted it, but her bones and muscles were so lazy that they weren’t allowing Lily to sit. “Is that for me?” She asked Niklaus with a slight smile.

Lira caught her, muttering something soft, and I realized the girl’s eyes were glassy. “She’s burning up,” Lira said. “Fever.” Roman swore. “In this place, that’s bad news.”

Nina's mind raced with questions, desperately seeking answers to explain Isabel's sudden illness. The doctor shook his head firmly. "No, it's unlikely. This fever seems to be the result of exposure to extremely cold temperatures, possibly from taking a long shower with ice-cold water," he reasoned, his diagnosis leaving Nina stunned. All of us raced to Lila’s room, my heart pounding in my chest. When we got there, Nina was pacing around, her panic filling the air. Lila lay limp on the bed, her tiny form frighteningly still. I knelt beside her immediately, my hand brushing against her forehead. Her skin was burning hot, her body dangerously feverish.

“No, Roberts. They paid us off to shut up. But that check is negotiable. They think they bought our silence; they didn’t.” Lara rose, her silk blouse a splash of rebellious colour against the monochrome room. She met Karen’s eyes, a silent, electric acknowledgement passing between the two women who had been rivals, allies, and partners in compromised ambition. “They think they sent us home to lick our wounds,” Lara stated, her voice low and tight with conviction. “They think the Indian fever broke.” Karen gave a thin, predatory smile that Roberts found terrifying. “The fever is the only thing we brought back, Lara. And they taught us how to use it.”

“Nora?” Her voice cracked on the first word. “Mara…Liam’s fever spiked again. 104.9. They’re working on him now. But…it's fine if you can't come.” The world narrowed to a pinprick. “I’m coming.” My voice sounded far away. “I’m coming right now.”
