Liora exclaimed, placing her hand on Caroline's forehead. "Mommy, you have a fever!" Liora gasped in alarm. Caroline was taken aback. She hadn't realized she had a fever but now felt dizzy. She reached for the drawer and grabbed an infrared thermometer. Liora leaned in to see. "Mommy, it's 38°C! You need medicine!" Caroline patted Liora's thigh. "Go outside, Lia. I don't want you to catch it if it's contagious." "Okay, Mommy!" Liora nodded and hurried out of the room.

Chapter Twenty-One: The Fever It started with a whimper. Lila had been unusually clingy all afternoon, refusing food, turning her head away even from the strawberries she usually devoured. Elena chalked it up to teething. Adrian rubbed her back and said, “Kids have off days too.” But by midnight, her skin was hot to the touch. By two a.m., she was burning up. Elena paced the bedroom with her daughter cradled to her chest, whispering nonsense lullabies while checking her temperature every fifteen minutes. 102. 103. 103.7.

Luna was unconscious for a long time. During this period, her condition did not stabilize at all. Instead, she ran a high fever recurrently and dreamed all sorts of nightmares. There was a huge fire in her dream, and she could see Neil and Theo trapped in it. They were shouting at her for help, but she could not go in to save them at all. No matter how hard she tried, she could not get closer to them at all. It was as though there was a layer of transparent glass separating her from them.

She just turned away and muttered something beneath her breath. The rest of the night passed in blur. Layla returned home under a washed out sky, her heart curled between anger, confusion, and something deeper she couldn't name. --- The next morning , Layla could not get out of bed. Her body was weak and heavy at the same time. Fever weighed down on her. Her hands were cold while her skin was burning. She groaned softly when she realised she couldn't move herself. She reached for her phone on the night stand and scrolled through for Greta's number.

LINC - The house felt more like a battlefield than a home. Two days into everyone being sick, and I was running on nothing but coffee and sheer determination. Declan was miserable, whining and restless in Selena’s arms as she paced the hallway, trying to get him to take a bottle. Lila and Cast were wrapped around each other in the bed, both drenched in sweat and completely out of it. I didn’t know how they could stand it, tangled together when they were both burning up, but they clung to each other like they’d fall apart otherwise.

There in bed laid our sweet Lyla. Sweat soaked her shirt and hair to her body as she took deep breaths, as if it was hard to breath if not as such. She was asleep, but you could tell she was in pain.

[Leena] Why am I getting cold? “Achoo!” I sneezed. I was surprised when a hand landed on my forehead. "Leena, you have a fever!" I looked at Joaquin as my forehead furrowed. "Why do I have a fever? Strange." I'm surprised because I don’t get sick easily. That's weird. I pushed his hand away. "I don't have a fever, okay? That's so impossible because I've never had a fever before." I smirked and stood up, a little dizzy. Am I really sick?

Fabe tilted her head to the side, still feeling groggy. She blinks her eyes to focus on the unfamiliar place she's in. "Where am I?" she said, holding her head. "Miss," Layla said, checking her temperature. Fabe got a slight fever last night and was under observation due to her condition. "Who are you?" Fabe kept blinking her eyes, becoming delirious, and couldn't recognize Layla. Then the pain hit her back to her senses.

Freya POV The room was loaded with colorful home items. “You need to wash up now, Gi—” “Lila, Mary. My name is Lila down here,” I whispered delicately enough to sound like a mosquito. I sat and sighted everywhere from one spot. It’s a guest room, one of the old apartments where the lasses used to be. I wonder where they sleep now. After having my bath, I changed into a pair of pants and a tank top that Alaric bought for me while we were coming down here. I didn’t think I needed it but it turned out I did.
