Inside the lead vehicle, the air was pressurized and silent, save for the rhythmic clicking of Oliver’s keyboard. For thirteen years, this stretch of ocean had been a graveyard. The energy field used to scramble navigation systems and shut down engines, leaving anyone who tried to cross to drown in the dark.

"Building needs to be secured in fifteen minutes." "Almost done," I call back, shoving the last of my toiletries into a bag. My reflection catches in the mirror above my dresser. I look like a stranger—hollow-eyed, pale, wearing the same clothes I've had on for two days. When did I start looking so broken? "Hey," Maya touches my shoulder gently. "You're going to get through this." "Am I?" The question slips out before I can stop it. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like my life is over."

He staggered backward, turned, and went to sit behind his desk. It wasn’t far enough, but it offered him sanctuary by its familiarity. He had lost his composure for a second there because no matter whatever delusions he may hold. He could never dream of anything even close to this setup. This fucked up scenario went far beyond his tired-ass imagination. His life seemed to be becoming more and more complicated every single fucking day. Nothing had worked out for him since the day he broke up with Solo. Had he jinxed himself with the stupid-ass choices he’d made over the last ten months?

Destabilizing them would stop this— For now. But it wouldn’t stop what came after. More groups. More attempts. More systems trying to rise from the same broken foundation. An endless cycle. Cassian saw the hesitation. “What?” he asked. Aria finally turned, just enough to meet his eyes. “This doesn’t end if we just break them,” she said.

A gasp could be heard by everyone. Elder Rose shakes her head. “It is possible you are nearing the last year before the bond breaks even though you did not accept. It will be painful each time one of the bonds snaps, more so each time.” She hesitates, looking like she wants to say something but doesn’t “That's impossible.
