In A Jam Kate Canterbary Novels & Stories

She feels angry at herself for thinking even for a moment that she had the right to make Nate feel helpless. In a flash, Kate has slammed down the jammer on the track. Directing her anger on it, she stomps at it with all her might and is satisfied when she hears a loud crack. Almost instantaneously, on the other side of the finish straight, Nate straightens up between Reggie and Jared, proof of the jammer’s cancelled effects. But Kate won’t – can’t – stop. She keeps stomping angrily at the crushed device, through tear-blurred eyes. She almost doesn’t notice when someone walks up to her and hugs her tight, just to make her stop. Finally, she recognizes – through her tears – Nate.

Dart boards, ring tosses, price wheels, and other fun games were waiting under striped canopies. Nearby, carousel horses gleamed beneath strings of lights, while giant teddy bears lounged in the grass. A candy station sparkled beneath glass jars filled with colorful sweets. Photographs from Kate's childhood hung from ribbons between the trees, capturing different moments of her life. Above them stretched a large banner which read: ‘Happy Birthday, Little Kitty.’ The sight stole the breath from her lungs. For a moment, Kate forgot she was turning twenty-six years old. She forgot about the pain she was meant to feel today; she forgot about everything else.

I inwardly cringe and open it up. Kate 'Babes you should have come out with us! we're at 1OAK if you still want to join us x' Why the fuck is she sending me an x when she met my girlfriend not even 2 hours ago. I need to be done with this, this has to be over. I carefully slip my arm from around Amelia and after insuring that she's still asleep I walk back downstairs and call her phone. She picks up on the final ring. "Rhode babes! Can you hear me! I've just jumped outside of the club, are you coming to join us?!" Kate calls out over a loud backdrop of music. I lean my back against the kitchen counter.

I could be at home, in bed, with a good book and a nice cup of coffee. Instead, I'm here. My ear drums blasting at the sound of loud music, guys hooting and howling as they play beer games and mes around. I can see a lot of girls giving me stares, making me feel more uncomfortable than I already am. "Here, girly. Got you a nice cold one. Peach flavored, right?" Kate says, handing me a bottle of southern peach jack Daniel's. I smile and take it off her hands, and take a big swig from the bottle to calm my nerves.

After several songs, Kate shouted in my ear, “I need to go to the bathroom!” “I’ll go with you,” I replied immediately. “Are you crazy? You have to stay and record! I’ve held it through three songs so I wouldn’t miss anything, but now I really can’t. It’s right back there,” she said, pointing about twenty yards away. “But, Kate—” “Please, Cams, stay and record. I promise I’ll be back in record time.” I hesitated. I didn’t like the idea of splitting up, but there didn’t seem to be much of a line, and I figured she’d be back quickly. I nodded and stayed behind, tasked with capturing everything on video.

I fall back on the bed. “I won’t be able to find him until I’m sixteen anyway. But my dad said my mate doesn’t matter, I still have to marry Cato,” I tell her. “I couldn’t imagine what you must be feeling, to know you have a mate out there but won’t be able to be with him,” She says, shaking her head. “It sucks!” She nods. “I’m sorry, Jazz,” She says. “Me too,” ……….. “Dominic, maybe we shouldn’t invite the Mortaga’s to Ginger's party next week,”

“No, thanks. I’m glad I made it through the last one. You can have another one if you want to, I’ll stay here.” Jennifer smiled as her reluctance. “It’s not so bad you know. You have to let go sometimes. Don’t be so uptight, come on!” But Kate shook her head once again. She was too perturbed to dive again and she wanted some time alone to think anyway. “No, thanks.” Jennifer sighed but refrained from any further arguments. As she was moving out of the small inlet, Kate caught sight of an dangerous-looking mark just under her belly and frowned. “Jen, what’s that bruise?”

It's creepinging KY out. KY shakes the head of KY. She's only attempting to gloat about having fun while KY must work. An hour or so after that, KY'm is kept busy with all the drink orders that still keep coming in. KY'm struggling to tune out CAT M'NOO, which is not easy to do when she still shoots KY a smug look as if she's just received an exclusive ticket to Chanel's catwalk show. KY winces as a piercing, shrieking noise is heard in the KASH MANCHESTER. Someone is juggling a microphone, and conversation floats away as people turn to face the small stage.

Some days she’s a little girl going on to being a teenager overnight. As we pulled away from Colby and Amelie, Kate waved as long as she could see them. She had a sad smile on her face; I reached over and took her hand. “You’ll be home before you know it,” I remind her. Smiling at me, she nods and just looks out the window. Jared POV
