I stepped forward, my fingers trembling slightly as I reached for it. “This is what we’ve been searching for,” I said quietly. Adrian placed a hand on my shoulder. “And it’s time we understand it.” I opened the book slowly. The pages were fragile, yet the ink remained sharp, clear, and deliberate. Symbols, diagrams, and instructions filled every page, a complex web of knowledge that seemed to span centuries. “This is… incredible,” I whispered. “It’s everything.”

I said. I looked at the hills above the settlement. At the autumn light in the folds of them. At everything that was still growing, still becoming, still doing the work of being what it was going to be. Three miles away, in a buried room, a book sat in the dark and waited to be read more fully. Dorian would go back to it. He would spend years on it. He would find things in it that would change the shape of what we understood about the design, and those things would produce new questions, and the new questions would require new answers, and the answers would in turn produce more questions, because that was what honest inquiry did.

Just like every other day, I finished my night with the same routine consisting of showering, brushing my teeth, and putting on warm socks. I couldn't help but feel excited as I grabbed In Search Of Lost Time by Marcel Proust. Nothing gets me as excited as starting a new book. There was something about reading that was so addictive to me. It was like an escape from reality.

They were priceless. Caitlin turned page after page, fingering the goldleaf, the beautiful illustrations, and reading closely the elaborate penmanship. It was in Latin, but Caitlin understood it. The book was about lost places. Caitlin read and read, and unlike the other books, it was riveting. She became intrigued. Her heart started beating faster, as she finally began to feel like she was onto something.

They stopped replying. At that point, Maggie's phone rang. She hurriedly clocked out and left work. I took one last look at Zach's file and stood up to go home. In the shower, I pulled off my silk scarf and exposed the ugly, twisted scar on my neck. Morris had caused it. Ten years ago, in the spring, I couldn't reach him. Courtney had disappeared, too. I gritted my teeth and used the last bit of money I had to buy a cheap plane ticket to find him.

He stared down at my book. "I don't know how you feel that is enough to truly escape." He shakes his head at my method. "I find it a bit more lasting than drinking. Other than that they are pretty much the same. They both leave you broken at the end of the experience. But at least you can take something away from reading." He scoffs at my words. "What could you possibly take away from reading?" He spits. "How on earth can it help you escape like drinking or drugs can?"

Exactly what I had spent hours repeating to myself. I pull the last book with the title Secrets of Time from the shelf. My hand gripped the book tighter as it was the same book Traian had in his home. I went through its pages. And after 30 minutes, I felt like I was reading the first book I picked in this room when I already read and browsed almost 15 books. My legs started to quiver and I sank to the ground, feeling as though my energy had left my body. The book dropped with a loud thud.

“Did the book suddenly grow magical legs and then escape?” “No… No, no, no, that can’t be.” I could feel the frustration crawling up to my chest, the book couldn’t just disappear, and it was my haven. “I left it right here.” Nathan and I spent the next two hours looking for the book that I was reading about thirty minutes before Nathan came inside, it was like magic. I don’t believe this is happening, what am I going to do when I am bored now? “What does the book look like?” Nathan was asking me for the tenth time in those two hours, and a frustrated sigh escaped my lips.

We rode for the rest of the day, and I lived in my little world with the book as my universe. I let myself get lost in its pages, going from one thing to another and then back. There were just so many interesting things to learn about hell, the past and how things came to be the way they were now, I was completely captivated and didn't even realise time was going.

The ancient tome lay open before me, its pages a labyrinth of inscrutable symbols and faded script that murmured of a time long forgotten. The musty scent of the library mingled with the potent tang of old leather, wrapping around my senses as I bent closer to study the enigmatic text.
