Chapter 45: The Battle of the Shadows As the allied forces moved deeper into the eastern forest, the air grew colder and more oppressive. CHAPTER sixteen The crack in the wall widened. Shadows poured through it like oil—thick, alive, hungry. Sarai stumbled back, Malik’s flames blazing across the throne room as he stepped in front of her. “Stay behind me,” he growled, voice edged with a darkness she’d never heard before. But one shadow moved faster than the others. A streak of black lightning. Before Malik could react, before Sarai could even breathe— the shadow shot around Malik, coiled behind her like smoke, and snatched her off her feet.

Night had fallen, and the sky was a canvas of swirling clouds, lit intermittently by jagged flashes of lightning. The air was heavy, vibrating with energy, as though the world itself anticipated the events to come. Eva stood at the edge of the cliff, the wind tugging at her hair and cloak, carrying the scent of rain and ozone.
