We crawled on hands and knees for what felt like an eternity, rising higher into the belly of the palace foundations until the water cleared and the air turned stale and dry. Marcus stopped at a small iron ladder leading straight up through a square ceiling hatch. He listened for a long minute, his head tilted, then gave us a single nod. He pushed the hatch open an inch. No voices. No footsteps. Just the distant, monotonous dripping of water somewhere down the corridor. My boots crunch over fallen debris—bits of plaster, old leaves, maybe bones—I’m not checking. The hallway narrows, then widens again as we step into a massive, domed corridor. A tall stone archway looms ahead, etched with vines and unfamiliar symbols that pulse faintly with light.
