I couldn’t comprehend the amount of information I had that day. I could see the entrance getting closer, as a shadow stepped out from the doors as my vision blurred, and I fell. I had nothing left in me; the darkness cascaded down around me as I was dragged into the abyss.

I just dove into my books even harder. Jennifer, Ella, whatever name I went by did not matter. I was determined to rock the life ahead of me, no matter the label. After four years of grinding, I made it to college, nailed my undergrad, and aimed for grad school.

I just picked one at random and went back to my bed. I didn’t even read the title of the book. I just opened in on a random page and began to read it. Moonlit Shadows Amidst the towering skyscrapers of the city, nestled within an alley forgotten by time, stood an abandoned building. Its once vibrant facade had succumbed to the embrace of decay, and its grandeur had faded to mere whispers in the wind. But this building held secrets, secrets that called out to those who dared to listen.

The silence in the cabin is broken only by the crackling of the fire. Shadow is near me, but his mind feels miles away. His golden eyes reflect the flames, as if he can see something within them that I can’t begin to understand. I try to rest, but it’s impossible. Every time I close my eyes, I feel the weight of his world pressing down on me. It’s not just the external threats—Caleb, the clan, the unspoken rules. It’s Shadow himself, with his walls, his secrets, his fears, which only seem taller and more impenetrable the closer I get.
