Senna The gate made a quiet, old sound when it opened. That was the first thing. I walked through the big gates behind Caius. My hands felt cold, even though the sun was warm on my skin. This was the Ironblood compound. Just like he said. I looked hard at everything, like I always do. It’s how I work. It’s how I keep things straight in my head. The buildings were made of rough-cut stone, solid and old. Smoke curled from a few chimneys. It smelled like woodsmoke and something else... something wild and green, like deep forest. My eyes scanned every corner.

The hot iron sizzles against the cold door, and I slide it down until it catches some feat of resistance. The lock. I push my whole body wait against it, hoping it works, and eventually I hear the iron breaking into the silver door lock until I breaks, splintering into little silver specs that fall to the floor. I throw the iron rod, knowing royals can hear too damn well for their own good, and push the door open just enough to slide out of.

I had bought time, but the Iron Peaks fortress, built deep into the heart of the inhibiting rock, loomed below, a black, brutal cage in the paling light of dawn. ​I looked at the hundred foot drop sheer granite streaked with iron ore. The iron was the enemy, neutralizing my magic, but it also offered a brutal pathway. My only way to catch the Shadow Cultists was to bypass the winding, guarded road, but I needed to leverage the very thing meant to neutralize me.

I want…no I need to wrap myself in that delicious smell and crawl away so no one can find me. I leaned into him and inhaled and oh, goddess did he smell so good. I felt different. My head was fuzzy and my teeth felt funny in my mouth. He grunted when suddenly I sank my teeth into my neck and the sweet taste of metallic sang as it hit my tastebuds. I moaned in delight. I pulled him closer into me. His fingers pressed deep into my hips. I need to stop but it’s so good it tastes like Iron but it’s so damn good.

The other Elders were huddled in the shadows, praying to a Moon that wasn't listening to them anymore. I turned toward the heavy iron gate that led back to the courtyard. I could still hear Killian’s roars, fainter now, but still there. He was still fighting. I walked to the gate. I didn't look for a key. I didn't look for a lever. I placed my glowing palms against the iron. The runes etched into the metal screamed in protest, sparks of blue fire dancing around my fingers. I pushed. The metal didn't just break. It melted. The iron turned to liquid slag, flowing away from my touch until there was nothing left but an open archway.

How the hell am I supposed to get out of here? For some reason, I just realized that my wrists are also bound behind my back, and then chained to my ankles so that I cannot move at all. How did they even get me up here? I wonder. I must be at least four feet above the floor. I wiggle around and try to break or move some of my restraints, but it is useless. I yell out in frustration when I realize what the metal chains are made of. With how quickly she was storming through the house, I had no doubt she’d throw me into the damned limousine herself if she could get away with it. My palms were sweating the entire drive, but I didn’t feel faint until we pulled up to a pair of towering wrought iron gates. The metal work was intricate, swirling around the bars like leaf-tipped vines of sterling silver and gold. A crest sat in the middle, splitting in half when the gates swung open. His first sight of the city gates confirmed that they had not been exaggerating. At first he simply took in the wonder. The massive gates were of highly polished timbers, strapped with ornate, heavy iron. The size alone made him realize that an immense amount of work had gone into their construction. What took his breath away, however, was that inset into each side of the gate was the image of a Dragon. Clearly representing the Guardians, the one on the left was composed of glittering quartz and pearl, scintillating in the growing daylight.
