Plus, when everyone around us was shifting, we were pretty much on lock down to make sure we wouldn’t. Since it’s not a birthday thing, Father thought we might shift past the inhibitor.”

Leaning against his chest, I listened to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. Maybe Jake was truly an anomaly, a time traveler who should never have existed. Maybe our world really did contain glitches, with two overlapping sets of memories and residual traces that reality failed to erase. But what about it? I loved him, and he loved me. "You're not allowed to go anywhere until the results are out, Ms. Shore." Taylor was beyond furious, while a layer of sweat beaded across Gabriel's forehead. I knew why they were panicking. Once the authenticity of the video was confirmed, Taylor wouldn't be able to escape. As her accomplice, Gabriel wouldn't be let off the hook either.

"You should take Dad's reputation into consideration, Mom. His subordinates are still around." Mom scoffed as she looked at the crowd of people behind us. "I suppose I can keep myself in check for Matthew's sake." Dad breathed a sigh of relief before shooting a grateful look at me. The three of us conversed with each other while ignoring everyone around us, leaving the Morenos and the outlaws stunned as they watched us. Frank was the first one to snap back to his senses. "You faked your own death, Matthew?" he demanded. "Did you do it so that the other Morenos would drop by our home to demand money from us?"

Frustrated didn't even come close to describing his emotions. In the meantime, while he'd integrated himself here, a shifter had died in another federal prison, one that didn't have an undercover agent, which left them with only a half-dozen prisons not yet hit and a sudden increase in the odds that his temporary home might be next. The shifter council didn't want excuses. They wanted results. To Ricky's annoyance, they decided to bring in more help. Not only was his fake lawyer who acted as his outside liaison being replaced by some chick who would be posing as a guard, they were pairing him with a shifter, some techno geek that he was supposed to protect.

“A civilization becomes predictable after enough recursive alignment.” A pause. “Patterns stabilize. Consciousness synchronizes. Identity converges into continuity.” Then her expression darkened slightly. “That stability becomes visible.” Lucian rubbed his face hard. “So basically the universe developed cosmic sharks for organized realities.” No one corrected him. Because again— That was dangerously close to accurate. Outside the sanctuary, the black figure moved closer. Not physically walking. Reality simply updated its location. One second beyond the mountains. The next— Standing at the edge of the valley beneath the sanctuary walls.

"And nothing. They're trying to experience all possibilities at once, and they're taking reality along for the ride." As if to emphasize my point, a ripple of change swept through the room. For a moment, everything became its own opposite – solid things turned transparent, digital things became organic, certainties became questions. Violet giggled as her stuffed animals briefly turned into quantum equations before snapping back to normal. "That tickled!" But I could feel it wasn't just our house being affected. Every convergence point was radiating waves of accelerating change. Reality itself was starting to buckle under the weight of too much possibility.
