“What’s bothering you?” Chris asked, easily, sunglasses going into his jacket pocket, his voice turning father-soft.
“You wouldn’t understand,” Scott said, almost lost in the engine hum.
Chris let the silence sit. Breeze up, gulls wheeling, wake hissing like torn silk. The truck deck thudded once as a chain settled.
“I know you’re not thrilled about leaving the city,” he said finally. “None of it was easy. We all left something. But the island—this is a start. For all of us.”
