I could spend years describing the two days we spent crawling around the sewers, working our way slowly through a maze of traps, automated locking doors, and waist-deep sewage, but if I'm honest, it was pretty boring. Disgusting and stressful, yes, but nothing happened that is worth mentioning. It was just a lot of gross, tedious exploration in our desperation to put as much distance between us and the Underground as possible. When we finally arrived at the sewer outlet closest to the distribution depot, that's when the real fun began. It all started with five guys surrounding us, pointing guns at our heads, fighting over who would have the honor of blasting our brains all over the ground.

After about 10 minutes I feel like a different person, I've done what I had to do and what I didn't have to do and I swear to myself I'll never eat mayonnaise again. I flush the toilet and wash my hands, and as soon as I come out of the bathroom, I see Oliver coming into the room. "We're going to have to share a room..." He doesn't even finish speaking as he makes a disgusted face and runs to open the bedroom window. "What the fuck is that smell? Has the sewage pipe burst? Oh my God! I'm going to make the manager give us another room! I'm not staying in this fucking room with a burst sewer!" He says almost shouting and sticking his head out of the window to breathe.

Flavio, on the other hand, appeared to be very accustomed to being in this kind of setting, and he made no effort to show it on his face that the smell didn't bother him in the least. In contrast to the first wave of stench that we were blasted with when we entered the sewer, the offensive odor gradually lost some of its power as we continued to go through it. Nikolai’s men must be throwing off their wits out by now, thinking why we didn’t come out from that bridge. Probably they were already scouring the entire city of Venice, and this realization has caused me some concern. What if, as soon as we emerged from the dead end, they were already there, waiting for us?

"Mom, my roommates are all really clean. Why would you hide something like this here? Are you trying to attract rats?" Before I could respond, her roommates came back from class. The second they stepped inside, they pinched their noses, their faces full of disgust. In less than two minutes, they found everything I had hidden. "Mrs. Dolton, we respect you. Please show us the same respect, okay?" "If you want to stay and take care of Elise, then don't bring stuff like this back here again." My scalp prickled. What the hell was going on? They couldn't smell that overwhelming stench, but they could smell smoked mackerel that hadn't even been opened?

“And don’t make a sound.” The cellar was small and cramped, the ceiling so low that Kaden had to duck. The floor was dirt, damp and soft beneath his boots. At the far end, there was another door, this one even older than the first. The bloody man pushed it open, and the smell got worse. The sewers beyond were a maze of narrow tunnels, the walls slick with slime. Water trickled somewhere in the darkness, and things scuttled away from the torchlight. “Which way?” Gregor asked.

The thunderous sound of the collapsing Behemoth filled the tunnels. They reached the gap and slid inside. Behind the breach, they found themselves in a larger main sewer line, with dirty water flowing beneath them. A faint light from above became visible. They had escaped the heart of the collapsing Behemoth. Behind them, a massive explosion echoed, followed by an eerie silence. The Behemoth was gone. They crawled out of the sewer, breathing in fresh air that felt like paradise. They were on a ruined street, in the middle of the city. The sky was clear, the sun shining brightly.

A man’s voice answered her. “They won’t.” I recognized the girl’s voice instantly. It was the heroine, Nancy. Of course it was. They were so desperate that they did it right here. Great. Exactly what I needed when crouched in a pitch-black cabinet. This was not the moment to reveal ourselves, so the two of us stayed frozen like corpses. The room was already dark, but inside the wardrobe it was pure suffocation. When you lose your sight, every other sense sharpens.

LUCIEN’S POV I crouched at the sewer entrance, my boots sinking into the damp earth, the air thick with the stench of rot and stagnant water. The tunnel yawned ahead, its rusted grate pried open, shadows pooling inside, the faint drip of moisture echoing off the concrete walls. My heart pounded, Olivia’s screams from Alaric’s call replaying in my skull, her voice raw, desperate, tearing at me.

Sarah could feel and smell the sewage content all over her body, in her mouth, her eyes, her hair, and everywhere else. She attempted to move, but all she managed to do was slip on some of the sewer that was on the floor. She could hardly breathe because the odour was obstructing her nose. She struggled to hold her stomach contents in because the entire room was drenched in sewer, and eventually all of the meal she had eaten spat over the floor. She needed to leave the room. In her attempt to get up and find an exit, she slipped and fell again on a mixture of her own vomit and sewage.

With the act she put up there, she has no choice but to obey now, does she? She slowly turned around and looked carefully at the passage. A hand pushed her from behind, making her crawl into the sewer entry. Beyond the initial part, it widens big enough for an elephant to stand. The putrid smell revolts her. Sloshes beneath her feet draw multiple disgusting images but she noticed that the floor is solid, as if it's made out of cement or wood.
