"I don't think either of us gets to make decisions today."
"Nope!" Theo called over his shoulder.
"I've noticed," Pearl said, laughing.
They reached the center of the square, where an enormous silver-leaved tree rose high above the rooftops, its branches shimmering in the sunlight. Hundreds of tiny ribbons fluttered from its limbs, each one carrying a handwritten wish.
Pearl stepped closer. "People wrote these?"
"Not wishes for themselves," the woman said.
Pearl looked at her, confused. "For who, then?"
"For someone they loved."
