Jeff wore plain clothes, looking like a normal middle-aged man. Marina had never seen Jeff before. She didn't know who he was. He also looked way slimmer than he used to be. Even Calista, who had seen him before, didn't recognize him even though she thought he looked familiar. Calista saw his dirty shoes and thought he was an attendant whom they had met before. "Who are you?" Jeff was very emotional, and even his voice trembled slightly. "What did you say happened to her parents?" "Who do you work for? How can you say something so rude?" Calista glared at Jeff as she spoke.

Because feeding a family felt more real than feeding a system. I got it. That scared me most of all. Behind me, Jeff stirred. “You’re awake,” he murmured. “Couldn’t sleep.” “Same.” I turned toward him. His hair was a mess. His shirt wrinkled from sleeping on the couch. And somehow, he still looked like a man who could walk into a press room and make diplomats hold their breath. He crossed the room and stood beside me at the window. “Do you think we caught it in time?” I asked.

“And if you’re going to lie, then don’t bother speaking. Lewinski. Who the hell is he?” Kyla stood frozen, her chest rising and falling fast. She couldn’t say it, but her silence already gave the answer. Jules walked into the room then, stopping when he caught sight of them. He exchanged a look with Kyla, but Jeffrey didn’t even spare him a glance. His whole focus was on her. “Was he my real dad?” Jeffrey asked. Kyla’s eyes watered as she gave a small nod. Jeffrey let out a short, bitter laugh. He had hoped it wasn’t true. He had hoped it was a mistake or some twisted misunderstanding. But deep down, he knew this was the truth and he could not deny it.

We were laughing over one of Kelly's outrageous stories when a rich baritone voice interrupted us. "Excuse me, I'm Jeff Williams. I'm looking for Scott Jenkins?" I felt my jaw drop. I had seen Jeffrey Williams on the screen and in photos, but never in person. He wasn't an exceptionally tall man, maybe five-eleven, tops, but he had a strong athletic build that made him appear taller, as well as chiseled features, bright blue eyes, and thick blond hair complete with a goddamn Superman forelock. Even dressed casually in blue jeans and a battered brown leather jacket, with his hair tousled from the brisk wind outside, he drew the eye and held it. All his words were always full of unfriendly sarcasm but had a meaning and a truth. "Thank you for helping me and Zean," Edward said then.
