“She always was,” I replied. “It’s just more obvious now.”

“Mommy, why was that uncle crying?” Adrian played with a rubber duck.
“Because he lost something important,” I said, washing his hair. “And he can never get it back.”
Julian walked in. “I just got a call.”
I looked at him. “What is it?”
“Ava Moretti is dead,” Julian’s voice was calm. “Drug overdose. Found in their bathroom.”
