She’s weighing her options, trying to decide if I’m a threat or an ally.
She finally meets my gaze, a small, tight smile playing on her lips. It doesn't reach her eyes.
"Sorry," she chirps, her voice suddenly bright, too bright. "Never seen him before. Don’t know anyone who looks like that." She shrugs, dropping the nail file and picking up a piece of the bubble gum she’s been chewing, pulling it from her mouth and stretching it between her fingers, an unnervingly casual gesture. The faint scent of artificial strawberry wafts across the counter.
