I wasn’t going to shake that unless I had a reason. Instead, I called Jason. He picked up on the third ring, his voice raspy with sleep. “You do realize it’s Saturday, right?” “Something’s wrong,” I said. “You busy?” He groaned. “I was dreaming about tequila and a beach in Fiji. But sure, ruin it.” Jason showed up within an hour, coffee in one hand, a protein bar in the other. Same as always. Sharp suit. Unshaven. Anyone looking would think the weight of the world bored him more than it burdened him. Jason lounged on the couch with an almost careless grace, head tilted against his knuckles, eyes shut. His robe hung loose over his shoulders, the kind of ease that came only to men who didn’t need to try. His hair was styled, swept back and tamed, as though he were about to step into a boardroom or onto a red carpet. Draped across the backrest beside him lay his 3-piece ash suit, ready. A figure, dressed in a black suit and tie, stood by the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking Lady bird lake,speaking in a hushed tone into his phone.

Chapter 2 To make the room even more intimidating, Jason sat at the table, clicking the keys of his laptop and speaking into the microphone of a headset he wore. He looked up, lifted a finger to indicate he’d be a moment, and finished his conversation. As he spoke, she drank in the sight of him, resisting the urge to squirm as she took a seat. Jason was fit and tanned, with handsome features that had a rougher edge than Josh’s still immature facial appearance.

The two wisps of the latter’s mustache looked gentlemanly and mirthful at the corners of his lips with an inexplicable ludicrousness to it. His stocky build made Zayne appear a few sizes smaller, and it was totally believable that he could shield Zayne with his sturdy body when danger befell.

I glance at Jason again, eating quietly whatever Heidi serves, without a single protest. At least five kilos… I’m sure he’s lost more than ten pounds. His frame looks lighter. God only knows if he ate anything while in custody. Jason had always been picky, pushing food around his plate as a child. Mom used to cook separately for him, standing for hours in the kitchen just so he would eat. After her death, feeding him became another war in the battlefield for dad. He brought in world-class chefs, one after another. But nothing helped… Jason stopped eating altogether. Ten kilos vanished in a few months.

And I needed a decent wardrobe and haircut. "We have to eat with the pack, so I can speak with them, remember? Plus I need clothes. You two are going to ruin all of these," I say, gesturing to the shredded shirt that probably belonged to a cousin. Jason groans and openly pouts. He points to his brother childishly. "He got to taste you," he exclaims with a whine. I can't control the booming laugh that leaves my throat. My 6'7", 250lbs giant of muscle is pouting. His puckered baby lips contradict the tattoos and rugged appearance.

She wanted to confirm if the other speaker was Jason. The camera focused. Natalie held her breath as a handsome profile appeared on the screen. It was Jason. He was dressed in a black suit, looking noticeably thinner than he was three months ago. His once-sculpted face was now slightly hollowed. Natalie had seen the tabloid headlines in Grendale.
