My fingers fumbled with the device, nearly dropping it twice before I managed to answer.
"Claire?" Her voice came through the speaker, sharp with immediate concern. "Oh, dear Selene, you sound terrible. What's wrong?"
I tried to speak, but all that emerged was a broken sob that seemed to carry the weight of everything I'd lost—Theo, my career, my sense of self, my future. The sound was so raw, so utterly destroyed, that it scared even me.
"I'm coming over," Jennifer said immediately, her voice taking on the commanding tone she used when dealing with medical emergencies. "Right now. Don't move, don't do anything. I'll be there in twenty minutes."
