I know you are responsible. As darkness was falling upon the earth. Jennifer sits across the street from Lillie’s house, waiting for her to leave. As soon as she left, Jennifer walked on the porch and sprinkled the ashes as instructed by Ellen. She walked back to her car and returned home. Minutes later, Lillie’s house is engulfed in fire. Smoke filled the sky and her house burnt to the ground. Nothing could be recovered.

It was a popular foreign novel, so she flipped through a few pages. However, as soon as she opened the book, she saw a letter sandwiched between the pages, with the words [To Liv] written on it. ‘For me? ‘From who?’ Out of curiosity, she placed the book aside and started reading the letter. The more she read, the more she felt weird about it. Chills ran down her spine. This was the letter that Jess wrote for her before she passed away. ‘Why is Jess’s letter to me with Zac? ‘Why did Zac never give me this letter…’

My mind is still stuck in those few seconds earlier when Rachel’s body almost crashed into the shelf, when my hand stopped the wood from falling, when her face was that close to mine. I can still remember the look in her eyes clearly. Surprised, but also something else. Something I didn’t have time to understand because everything happened too fast. I exhale slowly, trying to push the thought away. It’s just a small incident. No need to overthink it. I clear my throat softly, trying to normalize the atmosphere. “Are you two still going to be long?” I ask, trying to sound casual. Jessica raises the two thick books in her hands with a smile. “Nope. I already found everything I was looking for.

Chapter One - Sylvie Slam! The door to the café bursts open. The cold winter breeze whips through the small shop, rustling the loose strands of my ebony hair. Momentarily distracted, I barely notice the hard wall of a body until it is too late. Crash! The sound of several ceramic mugs shattering against the unforgiving concrete floor jolts me back into awareness. As if making a huge mess wasn't bad enough, the sound echoed throughout the room and now several, if not all, eyes in the café have been drawn to me. As the spilt coffee slowly spreads across the floor, so too does the hot, red flush of embarrassment across my cheeks.

I eased the door open and spotted a lone guard across the hall and through the doorway, flipping through a book on the shelf. So that’s why we got in so easily—this idiot’s slacking off. I inched the door open, soundlessly approaching him from behind. “Think he’s snooping?” Cece asked, amused. With a smile, I snuck up behind him, reached up, twisted, and snapped his neck. It’s been a while since I’ve killed like this—efficient, bloodless, leaving no trace behind. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever snapped this many necks in a single day.

He appeared to be a pretty closed-off person who didn't seem to enjoy interacting. I mentally shook my head at my new fascination with this random boy; I, Jessica Gaucho, don't obsess over men or even consider them unless I'm looking for a fuck, which is rare. "I'm just going to the bathroom," I say, and Dad nods and returns his attention to Mr Alberto. I swiftly rise from my seat, keeping my head up as I turn around and walk towards the restroom. I arrive swiftly, lock the door behind me, and handle my essential business.

Her face changed but it only slightly, but I saw it. "What is it?" I asked. She hesitated. "My journal." My stomach tightened. "What about it?" "I left it underneath everything." She swallowed. "It's on top now," she explained. A cold feeling settled in my chest. Someone had touched her things. They didn't steal anything but it almost like they wanted her to know. Jessica stepped back from the drawer. For the first time since I'd arrived, she looked genuinely shaken. And seeing that expression on her face did something unsettling to me.

It was missing, and I felt my skin was tight, my blood too thin. "Still awaiting a rescue, little Omega?” It was a voice as smooth as silk rubbing on a knife. I did not have to turn around to realize that it was Vanya. She was standing in the door, wrapped in furs which must have cost as much as my stepfather was worth. She was fair, and smelled--sweet lilies and metal--and it would not go well with the sea salt of my own. “You look pathetic, Jessica,” I mused, going into the cell. The orange glow reflected the wicked gleam in her eyes. “Deprived of your rogue defenders, trembling in a cage. It almost fills me with pity towards you. Almost."

Squinting her eyes then tapping the table. “A year passed like hundreds. Not looking back with my own luggage, smiling I may seem but I burn with something more than nothing. I should have left them a goodbye gift, a literal one –” She stopped with her eyes open wide and leaned back a bit. Sighing as she comfortably leans back and stares at the ceiling when the sheets are flipping back onto the first page. Despite hearing it, Jessica did not care. ‘That’s just a speck of his story. But –’ She thought to herself before her head turned to look at the boxes of it left to read. The books she read are piling up on her desk, that the ice on her drink melted and the warm food turned cold.
