Who are you trying to scare with that expression, like you're attending a funeral? You're just like those gold-diggers—reeking of greed and utterly vulgar!" Hearing these insults with my own ears, I felt nothing at all. Not anger. Not sorrow. Not even disappointment. Michael's POV Jessica looked… confused. Like she didn’t understand what was happening—like she had no idea why her body was reacting the way it was. From the moment she stepped into the hall, I caught her scent—wild and intoxicating. It hit me like a thunderclap, sending a pulse of heat through my veins. I knew she felt it too. Her reaction did things to my body that I couldn't explain. The way her chest rose and fell too quickly, the slight parting of her lips as if she couldn’t catch her breath.

I paused and glanced back at Susanne and Viktor as I approached the door, and without so much as a word to them, I walked inside, ignoring Viktor even as he kept calling my name. My heart stalled the moment I walked inside and saw Mr. Hall with three men in black suits, sitting around a table and discussing. An awkward silence crept into the atmosphere, their eyes locked on me. “Who are…” one of the men was asking when Mr. Hall spoke up. “She is Jessica Hemsworth. My assistant…” Mr. Hall paused, then looked at one of the men and continued. “Jessica is an artist, and she's best at what she does.” My jaw almost reached the ground, and I froze on the spot.

"Sure, Jagger knows I'm going, so I'll tell him to tell Layne too." Jessica hopped up from the table, grabbing her notebook and her coffee as she did so. Quickly, she made her way back to her room and hid the notebook with the others. On second thought, she made a note on the pages of the book to ask Bianca about some of the stories from her strip club days. There had to be an erotic romance in there somewhere. Ten minutes later, she had run a brush through her hair, applied some light makeup, and put on a pair of jeans and a thin t-shirt. He nodded as he picked up a small stack of papers and settled into a club chair that was on the opposite side of the carefully waxed mahogany end table that bordered the sofa. “Are there a lot of humans?” she persisted. Jasper shrugged as he focused his attention on the first paper. “I only met Cora and Bess,” he said. “Then, I was kept in the infirmary the entire time. This is a big place.” “It’s funny that he keeps humans on staff,” she mused. “Cora is his staff, correct?” Jasper looked up from his paper. “Why the interest in Cora?” he asked. Lila shrugged and gave a mock yawn. She didn’t want to admit to him that she’d noticed the way he’d admired Cora and was jealous.

The maids immediately begin serving breakfast, moving with the precision I expect from them. Yet, despite the delicious aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling sausage, Chloe and Stanley’s mother remain motionless, their arms crossed, their plates untouched.

A pull like a magnet, weak but just about perceptible. Caitlin opened her eyes and followed the pull as it led her to a shelf of dusty books. Her eyes skimmed across the spines, unable to read any of the languages. But then she saw one book in English and knew, deep inside of her, that she had found what she had been sent here for. She pulled the book down and a cloud of dust flew into the air. The book had clearly not been touched for centuries. She had to be careful with it in case the pages shattered on contact with her skin.
