Everything was happening so fast, I was shocked when I heard a deep intake of breath from Jessica. She half sat up, startling everyone. Immediately tears flowed down her cheeks, “Thank the Moon Goddess,” she murmured, as I moved closer to her. “Jess, I am so sorry,” I repeated as she slowly focused on me. “Not your fault,” she spit out. “We are going to get you to the operating room and try to get rid of the bug inside of you,” the doctor stated.

I choked out in my tiny voice. “No,” mother’s face crumpled in tears and her shoulders shook. It was then I began to notice the eerie silence in the house. The blood on her face and neck. My eyes widened as my mother whispered. “I’m sorry, Jessie. He would have killed us. I had to kill him first. To protect us. Please baby.
