“Too quiet for someone in paradise.”
She forced a small smile for him. “I’m just… tired. The flight, the heat, all of it.”
“You’ve been carrying too much,” he says, lowering his voice so only she can hear. “Even paradise can’t heal someone overnight.”
His smile returned, soft but tinged with worry. “You don’t need to force anything, Adrianna. I only wanted to see you smile.”
She offered him one, faint and fleeting. And that flicker of expression—so slight, so fragile—was enough to sadden him further. He wanted her light, but all he could touch was her shadow.
